Archaeological excavations proves that the territory of modern Dnipropetrovsk have been inhabited since Paleolithic times. The official foundation date of the Dnepropetrovsk city is 1776. In 1776, according to the Catherine II decree, province city Yekaterinoslav (the initial name of Dnepropetrovsk) was founded. For a short period of time, since 1796 Yekaterinoslav was renamed to Novorossiysk by russian emperor Pavel, in 1802 initial name of the city was returned to Yekaterinoslav.The modern name Dnepropetrovsk has received in 1926, city was named in honor of the Dnieper River and the USSR revolutionary Grigory Petrovsky. The leading positions in the economy of modern Dnipropetrovsk take steelmaking enterprises, as well as machine building, metalworking, chemical and food industries. Rocket and space technology factory "Pivdenmash" operates in Dnipropetrovsk, "Pivdenmash" produces: launch vehicles, satellites, rocket engines. Dnepropetrovsk Transportation infrastructure includes two railway stations, airports, river station, and 6 subway stations.
